Family & school-safe creative studio

Turn imagination into real books, comics, and narrated stories.

TheShortBooks is a private, adult-reviewed creative storytelling studio for families, homeschool groups, classrooms, and young creators. It began from an idea my son had, and the platform is now being focused around helping kids create safely instead of simply consuming more screen time.

Public marketplace features are preserved in the codebase, but hidden by default while ShortBooks is refocused around private, family/school-controlled storytelling.

Built around control, not chaos.

Work can be kept private, shared with family, reviewed within a classroom, opened to a school community, or eventually made public only when those visibility options are enabled.

Available visibility modes

Current focus

Private-by-default creation for families, homeschool groups, classrooms, and education organizations.

What families and schools can do

See examples

Create stories

Kids and young creators can draft original stories with guided structure, revision, and adult review.

Build comics

Turn scenes, characters, and dialogue into comic-style projects that are easier for visual learners to engage with.

Add narration

Narrated stories can support reading fluency, presentation practice, and family keepsake projects.

Review before sharing

Parents, guardians, teachers, and organization reviewers control what gets approved and where it can be seen.

Use private groups

Classrooms, co-ops, microschools, and larger schools can organize creators, assignments, submissions, and reviews.

Export finished work

The goal is a finished project kids can be proud of: a readable story, comic, portfolio item, or downloadable keepsake.

Designed for the next phase

Schools & districts

Family first

The emotional core stays intact: this started with a child’s idea and a parent building around creativity.

School-ready direction

The codebase now favors configurable visibility, adult review, education groups, and private-by-default work.

Marketplace preserved

The older publishing marketplace tools are not deleted. They are hidden behind flags so they can be revived later if needed.
